What is the Best Roofing Color for Your New Home Construction?
One of the first steps of building a new home after the framing is complete is to get a roof on to protect the interiors. This article will help you find the best roofing color for your new house!
No matter the reason for the new roof, many of us come to the point where we have to choose a new roof color. Sometimes we may need a new roof or we may be doing new construction. Other times, we may just be looking for a roof replacement and want to change the color while we are at it. But before buying the roofing materials, let’s consider which colors to pick.
Why is your roofing color important?
Is choosing the best color combination for your roof and house as important as we think it may be? Is our home’s exterior worth thinking twice about if it’s the roof of our house?
You may be surprised to learn that choosing the roof color of your home is much more than simply about the style of your home. Yes, the outside view is extremely important, but there is more to think about than aesthetics.
Other reasons why picking the best roofing color is important
Resale value: Choosing the right color to match the style of your home can help with the resale value. Likewise, if your house looks different than the other homes on the block due to color, that could affect resale value as well.
Energy efficiency: Energy costs are rising constantly, and sometimes we can get quite the shock when seeing our energy bills. Lighter colors may help keep the home cool since they reflect UV rays instead of absorbing UV rays. This is especially true if your home is in the mountains, as your roof is even more susceptible to those rays. In addition, you can get tax credits by having a metal roof on your home.
What is the difference between the best roofing color and the most popular roofing color?
In recent years, we have noticed more people trying out new colors or even multiple colors.
Always keep in mind that there is a difference between the “best roofing color” and the most popular roofing color.
We wanted to report to you with the most popular roofing color for this year, to see if it would match what you are looking for. After a lot of research, we have determined that multiple roofing companies are giving different colors the winner. Some say a deep black shingle, others say grey is more popular. Owens Corning has declared the roof shingle of the year as Midnight Plum.
So instead of finding the most popular roof shingle color, ask yourself: what is going to work best for your home?

How to choose the best roofing color
A good idea is to consider all the different options before choosing the best roofing color. We provided six different elements to consider when choosing the best color for your home.
#1 What color is your house?
This should be among the first things to consider when choosing the color of your roof. Different colors look great with different sidings or bricks, making it the most important factor. Later we will break down the best roof depending on the siding color.
#2 What type of shingles do you want?/What type of roof do you want?
To think about the best roofing color, it is best to first consider what type of shingles you are hoping for.
Are you looking for asphalt shingles- a type of shingle that uses asphalt to help waterproof the roof? Or are you looking for a metal roof? Or something else? Determining it all will be a huge help in narrowing down the color.
#3 What type of aesthetic do you want?
Roofing color is a big decision because of how you want your house to look. A roof is a big part of a home’s style and the overall look of your home.
A roof will also help with the curb appeal of your home. So do you want a classic color or a bold color to draw in attention? Do you want a solid color or a mix?
#4 What is your location?
When trying to determine the best roof shingle colors, don’t forget to consider where you are geographically.
For example, if you like in the Pacific Northwest, you may consider matching your roof with colors that match your natural surroundings. If you live in a hot climate or warm climate, as we explained above you may want lighter colors to repel that heat. If you live in a colder climate, picking darker colors can help absorb more heat.
#5 What other exterior elements do you have?
It can be great if your roofing shingles have a cohesive look to the rest of your home- and that includes whatever you have outside! Think about your outside elements and compare them to what roof color you choose. If you have a lot of different outside items, consider a neutral color.
#6 Spy on your neighbors!
You would be surprised how much a roof can affect a home’s value.
It can make a huge difference if all of your neighbors have light-colored roof, and then your darker roof stands out like a sore thumb. Your favorite lighter-colored shingles you picked out could then have an effect on a home’s curb appeal.
Best roofing colors for 2024 (by house color)
Light-colored shingles or darker shingles? That is the question for the year!
To make it a bit easier to choose, we broke it down by house color or siding color. Deciding on the roof based on the house’s siding paint colors is the best way to go.
Brown: For brown houses, picking the right roof color is a bit easier because you have more color options. Almost any color brown roof will match a brown house- whether dark brown or light brown. You could also add be bold and choose green or blue for those lighter browns and it will still match. Here is an example of solar and metal roofing from Global Home Improvement.
Brick colors: For any type of brick house, whether red brick houses or any other type, you want to make sure the roof is darker than the brick. A dark gray color or black shingles may be best. A lighter-colored roof may make the brick look bland, so a black roof may be preferable. If you want multiple colors, make sure that you pick one that complements the red brick the most.
White house: If you have white siding, the right roof shingle colors may be dark shingles, such as black, or gray. A gray roof will help the white be bold such as this silver metal roof.
Gray house: If you have gray siding that is medium-gray, this is one of the few times that you could pull off a white roof. If it is dark gray though, you probably want to match the roof as much as possible.
Blue siding: For a light or dark blue siding, a light gray or dark gray roof will match. Black will work as well.
Red house: Dark brown is a great shingle color to go with a red house. Gray or black work as well. Here is a red Hardie siding house wtih grey roof.
Yellow house: Blue can be a wonderful color choice for a yellow house. It is bold and stands out beautifully. However, black, gray, and different shades of brown are all good options as well.
One thing to keep in mind is the idea that all roofs being one color is a thing of the past. Many roofs now have a color scheme or more than one solid color.
You picked the best roof color for your house! What’s next?
You just made an important decision: you picked out the color of your shingles! Congratulations! Choosing the best roofing color can seem overwhelming until you break it down by aesthetic, location, and house color, and then suddenly the step-by-step process becomes simpler.
The first step after choosing your roofing color would be choosing trim colors. Don’t overthink trim colors- matching the trim colors will be easy once you have a roof picked out.
After choosing the trim colors, the next step would be to consult a roofing contractor. Some roofing companies even have online visualizers if you like to see what something will look like beforehand like I do.
Many roofing companies provide a free estimate, so it does not hurt to talk to multiple people. It is a great way to get a variety of opinions and choose what is best for your house. In addition, many roofing companies have online visualizer to get an idea of what your home will look like.
