What is the #1 best Sherwin-Williams paint color for your living room this year?
Before you look at a bunch of different shades or color palettes, try starting with the year’s color for 2024! That can help narrow down the best option for your living space.
The 2024 Sherwin-Williams color of the year is called “Upward.” Once you look at the color, it is obvious why Sherwin Williams chose it. It is like a breath of fresh air.
Sherwin Williams uses the first two words to describe this great color “warmth” and “intrigue.” And it is definitely both of those!
So if you are looking for a great color for your living room, this may be the perfect backdrop for you.
The light reflectance value for this color is 30. I personally think this is a great paint color because it seems like a combination of bright colors and neutral paint colors. In addition to living rooms, this would be a great color for laundry rooms or other rooms that you wouldn’t normally expect an amazing color.
Some things to consider before picking out your paint colors
Before you pick out your color based on the top colors recommended by Sherwin Williams, there are a few things that you may want to consider. Know your space, decide the type of look that you want, decide if you want an accent wall (or any other type of additional colors,) your trim color, and make sure to use samples!
Know your space
It is important to look at your space with fresh eyes (or try to look with fresh eyes) before picking out your color. One of the most important things to consider is how much natural light you have in your living room. There’s no such thing as too much light, it is just that brighter colors will look different depending on the light. In some cases, it can look like a completely different color! Consider the amount of lighting you have before anything else. This is why it is important to use those paint samples!

Another important concept to consider is if you have an open space concept. Does your living room evolve into your dining room, or are they completely separate? If you are only planning for your living room walls, there are fewer considerations to think through.
The same thing goes for your kitchen space if you have an open concept. If you can see everything from your living room, you’ll want to consider elements that cannot be changed such as your kitchen cabinets.
The type of look you want
Some of us cannot wait to paint our living room to get a new modern look. For others, the primary color needs to be a neutral one. There are a few of us who won’t be happy unless it is a type of white or a classic grey! Keep in mind what your overall hope is for what the room looks like.
It’s okay if you are not 100 percent decided on the type of look you want, but make sure to at least have ideas when you pick out your paint. Don’t solely think about the living room either, make sure you keep the whole house concept in mind.
Do you want an accent wall?
Will you need to consider an accent color when picking out your color theme? Sometimes we decide too late that we want an accent wall, and then we need to start picking out a new color from scratch.
Know your area and decide ahead of time if you are going to want an accent wall, and then plan around it instead of the opposite way around.
Trim color
Make sure to include thoughts on your trim color as well. Many of us forget about the trim when we are planning what color we want for our living room.
Use paint samples
We mentioned this above, but it is important to say it again. Use paint samples! They have them for a reason. No matter how well we know our space, we don’t always know the color and how it will show up on our wall, so use the paint samples! It’s also important to compare it during different times of the day.
How to choose the best Sherwin Williams paint colors for your living room?
When picking a color scheme for your living room or family room, it is important to overall know how to choose the perfect paint color.
My number one recommendation for choosing the right paint color is to choose what you love. If you try to solely go off of what is trendiest, you may end up with a living room you are not in love with. Go with your heart, and use that as the starting point. It doesn’t mean you will end there, but make sure you at least start there.
Next, look around your house and see what colors are already there that you like. Is there artwork with a specific color you like? What will go with what you already have set up for your house?
From there, consider talking to a Sherwin Williams expert. They can take you through a step-by-step process to find the right color for you and your living room. I did this for our new home and it was extremely helpful!
