Smart home ideas for new construction
The list below includes the greatest smart home ideas for new construction. A lot of people have a few of these in their homes, but if you are building a new home, you get the liberty to add whichever ones you’d like!
Here are 30 amazing ideas to include when working on building a new home.
Smart home system
Often, smart home technology lies in one specific home automation system. My recommendation is to start by looking for a home system because it is very often that a home system will also include some of the other smart technologies we have in the list.
Smart irrigation systems
We start with this one because we know it’s a peculiar one, but it is one that is often forgotten about. According to the EPA, the average family in the United States uses 300 gallons of water a day, with 30% of this being outdoors.
If you choose to include a smart irrigation system, this could save a lot of water, which not only helps the environment but your water bill. You can choose either weather-based sensors or soil moisture sensors.
Smart garage door openers
Is a smart garage door opener worth it? Absolutely! Unlike older homes where you would have to work through an older control panel to make your garage door “smart,” working on a new home means you can set it up exactly the way you want from the beginning.
By setting this up, you can open or close your garage door simply with an app. This is great for those of us that always drive away and then spend the rest of the day wondering if we actually closed the garage door or not!
In addition, you can include cameras on your smart garage door opener so that you can see who is entering (or leaving!) just like with your Ring Doorbell! This is very handy with teenagers and children who arrive home from school before parents do from work!
Smart hardwood floors
Have you ever heard of smart hardwood floors? I hadn’t until it was time to build a house. These floors are resistant to almost everything, from water to chemicals to fire.
Moisture resistance is especially great for bathrooms to prevent mold. And you can add heating elements to your floors if you live in areas with very cold temperatures!
Smart faucets
Imagine putting your hands in front of the faucet and having the water automatically come out, just like in restaurants. You can install smart faucets to do the same thing in your home.
Not only does it keep your faucet exceptionally clean, but it is a great way to save water as well. This is one of my favorite features when we built our new home.
Smart Dishwasher
A smart dishwasher will wash your dishes the same, but it will also tell you when the dishes are done. Many of them also come with voice control! Alexa, start the dishes!!
Smart vents
A smart vent sends air through a filter before pushing it into the home. This is a great way to start your home with great air quality from the beginning.
Smart ceiling fans
Installing smart ceiling fans can save you a ton in electricity bills, and is a great way to conserve energy and help the environment. Never forget to turn a fan off again when you install smart ceiling fans.
Humidifier system
Creating a humidifier system in your new home can help you create humidity in rooms with a click of a button. There is nothing better than this when someone is sick; you can simply humidify their room with the touch of a button.
Smart intercoms
If you have a lot of family members in one house, smart intercoms are a huge help. You can set it up to speak to each other from intercoms, or from a device to an intercom. No more yelling up the stairs to call everyone to dinner!
Smart showers and baths
A smart shower not only turns a shower or bath on and off, but it can also control the flow of the water as well. This is an exceptional way to control water use in the house. If you are designing a custom bathroom you might as well add this to the wishlist!
Smart water leak sensors
Out of all the different smart home ideas for new construction, this is one that could end up saving you thousands of dollars as time goes on. Installing a water leak sensor, or a mold sensor, can prevent mold or stop it immediately before it gets out of control.
Smart virtual assistant
In this day and age, we are busier than ever. If you are looking for smart home ideas, make sure you have a voice assistant as well! Programs such as Google Home can help with routines, traffic, calendar, and even flight information if you travel a lot. Amazon Alexa can also help with this.
Smart home detectors
It is great that our homes have smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors. But what if you could be alerted that one was going off- even if you weren’t home?
That is exactly what smart home detectors can do. Not only do they alert you when an alarm is going off, but some even tell you the amount of smoke that there is, or where it is coming from.
The absolute best part? You can be alerted when batteries are getting low, and which alarm is low. No more chasing the chirp!
Smart thermostats
Smart thermostats do much more than simply turn up or down the air in your house. A good idea is to find one that adjusts the temperature in each room automatically based on certain conditions. For example, if you have more natural lighting in the living room that tends to make it warmer in there, your smart thermostat could adjust accordingly.
Smart locks
Smart door locks are either Bluetooth or Wi-Fi devices that can automatically lock your door for you.
Not only is this great to keep safe, but it is a bonus if you have teenagers or other kids that are not the best at remembering to lock doors.
You can also choose smart locks as an easy way to be able to unlock doors if someone needs to get in. This is great if you need a neighbor or family friend to have access to the house for any reason. With a simple press of a button on a smartphone app, you can control your doors!
Smart lights
A great advantage of a new build is that you can make your switches smart switches. Having smart light switches will give you the ultimate lighting control that you’ve never had before.
A lot of times we overlook installing a smart lighting system when we think of smart features, but in the long run, having smart lights can save energy costs astronomically. Plus, there is nothing cooler than using the Alexa app to turn off the lights at night! You will want to be sure you notify your electrician of these plans as they lay out your electrical wires.
Smart bulbs
Smart light bulbs are light bulbs that can be controlled through remotes or by voice commands. Most work through an Internet connection.
Smart outlets
Many people have smart plugs, but when you build your own home you have the option of selecting smart outlets! Smart plugs and smart outlets are similar, but smart outlets are a more permanent solution.
Most of the smart outlets are compatible with Alexa or Google Assistant, which gives you complete control over anything you decide to plug in.
If you start your new home with smart outlets, it will give you ease to be able to use your voice to control the energy efficiency of your home.
Video doorbells
Installing a smart doorbell from the beginning can create a lot of peace of mind when someone rings the doorbell.
If you are building a new home in a new area, chances are you do not yet know the neighbors or much about the neighborhood. By having video doorbells from the beginning, you can always see (and hear) who is at the door before you open it.
Smart security system
Out of all the different options to make a home smart, smart home security systems definitely give the greatest peace of mind. This option gives 24/7 security over your home, all through the power of your electronic devices.
A lot of these systems include security cameras, video doorbells, and more. With all of the different options, there are a few important components to consider when choosing one to purchase:
- Decide how many other “smart devices” are included, to make as much of your house smart with one device
- Consider how many monthly charges there will be in addition to purchasing the system
- Check to make sure if there are any early termination fees for any of the monthly charges
- Decide if you want only outdoor cameras, or indoor cameras as well
- Check to see if Wi-Fi is required, or if the security system can work on cellular data (just in case the Internet is down)
Other smart devices
It is great to add and install smart devices to your house when working on new construction, but it is just as important to consider what smart devices you will add to your house as well.
Of course, these won’t require the type of installation that other smart home automation ideas will. But if you plan ahead, you can make sure that the right things are installed in the right rooms to easily accommodate your smart devices.
It seems like any appliance can be made smart now. Some smart devices to remember to include in your list are:
- Smart TV
- Smart ovens
- Smart washing machines and dryers
- Smart refrigerators
- Smart kitchen appliances
- Smart speakers
- Smart coffee maker
- Smart pet feeders
My favorite is a smart washing machine and dryer. If your laundry is on a different floor, you will receive an alarm on your phone when your wash or dry is done! This prevents a lot of wrinkled laundry sitting in the dryer all day. You can also start or stop a wash for any reason, which is helpful. With 5 dogs I am definitely thinking of including a smart pet feeder to my Amazon cart!
Final Thoughts
It is always fun to have the latest technology in a home. In recent years, there have been more opportunities than ever to make your new home “smart.” With as little as a wi-fi connection and smartphone control, you can feel like your have the Jetson home of the future!
