A smart home simply means that you have parts of your home connected to mobile devices or voice control that will allow you to work parts of your house with ease. No more remembering to turn every light and device off- you can now do it with a simple press of a button on your device!

Smart technology is used to make your life easier, but smart home products also serve other purposes such as energy conservation, water conservation, and more. You can also arrange for parts of your new home to work at specific times, either through your phone or voice control. 

A smart home can also help with increased organization. With the best smart home devices, you can use them to establish and continue routines in your home while saving time.

Often, smart home technology lies in one specific home automation system. My recommendation is to start by looking for a home system because it is very often that a home system will also include some of the other smart technologies we have in the list.

Smart irrigation systems 

We start with this one because we know it’s a peculiar one, but it is one that is often forgotten about. According to the EPA, the average family in the United States uses 300 gallons of water a day, with 30% of this being outdoors. 

If you choose to include a smart irrigation system, this could save a lot of water, which not only helps the environment but your water bill. You can choose either weather-based sensors or soil moisture sensors. 

Smart garage door openers

Is a smart garage door opener worth it? Absolutely! Unlike older homes where you would have to work through an older control panel to make your garage door “smart,” working on a new home means you can set it up exactly the way you want from the beginning. 

By setting this up, you can open or close your garage door simply with an app. This is great for those of us that always drive away and then spend the rest of the day wondering if we actually closed the garage door or not! 

In addition, you can include cameras on your smart garage door opener so that you can see who is entering (or leaving!) just like with your Ring Doorbell! This is very handy with teenagers and children who arrive home from school before parents do from work!

Have you ever heard of smart hardwood floors? I hadn’t until it was time to build a house. These floors are resistant to almost everything, from water to chemicals to fire. 

Moisture resistance is especially great for bathrooms to prevent mold. And you can add heating elements to your floors if you live in areas with very cold temperatures!

Smart faucets

Imagine putting your hands in front of the faucet and having the water automatically come out, just like in restaurants. You can install smart faucets to do the same thing in your home. 

Not only does it keep your faucet exceptionally clean, but it is a great way to save water as well. This is one of my favorite features when we built our new home.

Smart Dishwasher

A smart dishwasher will wash your dishes the same, but it will also tell you when the dishes are done. Many of them also come with voice control! Alexa, start the dishes!!

A smart vent sends air through a filter before pushing it into the home. This is a great way to start your home with great air quality from the beginning.

It is great to add and install smart devices to your house when working on new construction, but it is just as important to consider what smart devices you will add to your house as well. 

Of course, these won’t require the type of installation that other smart home automation ideas will. But if you plan ahead, you can make sure that the right things are installed in the right rooms to easily accommodate your smart devices.

This prevents a lot of wrinkled laundry sitting in the dryer all day. You can also start or stop a wash for any reason, which is helpful. With 5 dogs I am definitely thinking of including a smart pet feeder to my Amazon cart!
