Copper sinks have become increasingly popular in recent years, and for good reason. They offer a unique and elegant look that can add character to any kitchen. If you’re thinking about selling your home in the future, a copper sink can be a great selling point. They are one of the most popular options for home buyers, and can add value to your home.
While copper is a beautiful sink choice for aesthetic benefit and home value, it also comes with a pretty expensive price tag.
In the below article, we provide the pros and cons of a copper sink and some other information that will help you make the best choice for your home.
Pros of a Copper Sink
If you are considering your new kitchen sink options, it’s important to weigh the pros and cons of copper kitchen sinks. Here we will cover some of the advantages of a copper sink:
Durability
One of the biggest advantages of a pure copper sink is its durability. Copper is a naturally strong material that resists stains, scratches from sharp objects, and dents. In fact, many copper sinks are made from a single sheet of copper, which means there are no seams or joints that can weaken over time. A copper sink can withstand heavy use, and it won’t rust or corrode like other metals, meaning they can last for decades with proper care, making them a good investment for your home.
Antibacterial Properties
Surprisingly, your choice of sinks could offer health benefits. Copper has natural antimicrobial properties that make it a popular choice for kitchen sinks. Bacteria from dirty dishes and other microorganisms can’t survive on copper surfaces for long, which means your sink will stay cleaner and fresher. This is especially important in a kitchen where food is prepared and bacteria can easily spread.
Heat Resistance
Copper is an excellent conductor of heat, which means it can handle hot water and other liquids without warping or cracking. If you frequently use hot liquids in your sink, a copper sink may be the right choice for your kitchen.
Aesthetics
One of the main reasons people choose a copper sink is for their unique and beautiful appearance. They really can create a modern masterpiece of your kitchen with a warm, rich color that adds character and style to any kitchen. Copper sinks also develops a natural patina over time, which gives it a rustic, vintage look.
In summary, copper sinks offer durability, natural antibacterial properties, heat resistance, and aesthetics that make them an ideal choice for any kitchen.
Cons of a Copper Sink
Now that we’ve looked at some Pros, it is important to be aware of the potential downsides of that beautiful copper surface. Here are some cons of copper sinks to keep in mind:
Maintenance
Copper sinks require he daunting task of regular maintenance to keep them looking their best. You will need to wipe your sink down with a soft towel after every use to prevent water spots. Additionally, you should clean your sink regularly with mild dish soap, warm water, and a soft cloth or sponge. Failure to maintain your copper sink properly can result in staining and the development of a patina that you may not find appealing.
Cost
Copper sinks are generally more expensive than other types of sinks. While the average cost to install a sink is $400 for materials and installation, you can expect to pay anywhere from $400 to $2,000 for a copper sink, depending on the level of craftsmanship and customization involved in mounting it.
Staining
Copper sinks are prone to staining, particularly if you do not maintain them properly. If you leave acidic foods like lemon juice or vinegar or even salty water on your sink for too long, they can etch the surface and cause permanent damage. You may also notice that your copper sink develops water stains over time, which can be difficult to remove.
Patina
It’s worth mentioning that copper surfaces have a living finish. It is the nature of copper to change or patina over the years. This will change the appearance of copper sinks throughout it’s lifetime. While some people appreciate the aged look concept of patina that develops on copper sinks, others may find it unattractive. If you prefer the shiny finish of a new copper sink, you will need to be diligent about maintaining it to prevent the patina from forming.

If you are willing to put in the effort to maintain your copper surface , it can be a beautiful addition to your kitchen.
Installation Considerations
When it comes to installing a copper sink, there are a few things to keep in mind. Here are some considerations to keep in mind to ensure a smooth installation process.
Sink Size
One of the most important things to consider when installing a copper sink is the size of the sink. Will you have an undermount sink, drop-in sink or a vessel sink? You’ll want to make sure that the sink you choose fits properly into, or onto, your countertop and cabinet. Measure the sink and the space where you plan to install it to ensure a proper fit.
Faucet Compatibility
Another important consideration when installing your sink is faucet compatibility. Make sure that the faucet you choose is compatible with the rest of the sink and that it will fit properly. You may need to purchase a special faucet that is designed for use with a copper sink. As I mentioned in my smart home article, one of my favorite features of my new home is my touchless faucet.
Plumbing Requirements
You’ll also need to consider the plumbing requirements for your copper sink. Copper sinks generally require a different type of drain than other types of sinks. Make sure that you have the proper plumbing in place before you begin the installation process. In addition to these considerations, you may also want to consider hiring a professional plumber to install your copper sink. A professional plumber will have the experience and expertise necessary to ensure a proper installation and can help you avoid any potential issues or problems.
Cleaning and Maintenance Tips
Copper sinks are a beautiful addition to any kitchen, but they require some special care to maintain their luster. Here are some tips for cleaning and maintaining your copper sink:
Daily Cleaning
To keep your copper sink looking its best, you should clean it daily with mild soap, warm water, and a soft cloth or sponge. Additionally, the sink should be rinsed after each use to wick away any acidic or oily residue that can cause changes to the copper patina. To prevent spotting caused by hard water or minerals in the water supply, dry the sink after every use.
Weekly Cleaning
Once a week, you should give your copper sink a more thorough cleaning. Start by applying a small amount of dish soap to a sponge or cotton dishwashing cloth, and wipe down the sink, remembering to get under the rim. Rinse the sink thoroughly with warm water, and then dry it with a microfiber or lint-free cotton dishcloth.
Monthly Maintenance
To maintain the modern look and patina of your copper sink, you should polish it once a month with a copper cleaner or a mixture of lemon juice and baking soda. Apply the cleaner with a soft cloth, and then buff the sink with a dry cloth to remove any residue.
Avoid Harsh Cleaners
Avoid using harsh chemical cleaners, metal scrubbing pads, or steel wool on your copper sink, as these can scratch the surface and damage the patina. Instead, stick to mild soap and warm water, or use a copper cleaner specifically designed for copper sinks.
Preventing Stains
To prevent stains on your copper sink, avoid leaving acidic or oily substances in the sink for extended periods. If you do spill something acidic or oily, clean it up immediately with mild soap and warm water. Remember to dry with a cloth to avoid spots.

Why I chose to go with the Copper Sink for my Farmhouse kitchen design? Pros and cons of a copper sink
After reviewing all of the pros and cons of owning a copper sink I still chose to go with the purchase and I am very happy that I did. Yes, my copper farmhouse sink has already started to patina, but considering I use teal/turquoise as an accent color in my open kitchen/living room it just adds to the character for me! I have cleaned it a few times with the MAID CLEANER but I actually prefer the dull copper to the shiny copper. I have many other copper accents in my kitchen so it coordinates well. Also, I had a tough time deciding between a single basin copper sink and a double basin, but I finally knew my OCD would need to have the two sections to separate items and food!
